Get two crops out of it. Start seeds for early spring planting. Then harvest and you may get a second harvest from the same plants.
Starting Indoors
To grow broccoli in the spring, start the seeds indoors about 7-9 weeks before the last frost for your zone. In zone 5 that’s around March 15 (give or take a few days).
Transplant your seedlings when they have a minimum of 2 sets of true leaves about 2 weeks before your last frost date (around May 1 here, generally) after hardening them off for about 4 days.
Fall Crop
You will start your seedlings indoors for this as well. Start your seeds indoors (July 1) 15 to 17 weeks before your first expected frost. You’ll start them the same way you did the spring crop.
Keeping the direct sun from the plants and soil is another way to prevent broccoli flowers and keep the ground cool. Row covers are frequently used to keep cold weather crops producing longer. Also, water broccoli (at the roots, not the leaves or head) in the hot afternoons to keep the ground cool.

Companion plant with Nasturtiums, either as an edge to the bed or under the broccoli plants as they will spread. Score the seed with file as they have hard seed coat. Start seeds in fiber pots as nasturtium roots are easily damaged when transplanting.
